How does the short-haul exemption work?
The short-haul exemption simplifies HOS compliance for drivers staying close to their home base.
- Eligibility requirements: Operate within a 150 air-mile radius (172 statute miles), complete all driving and on-duty tasks within 14 consecutive hours, and return to the same work reporting location at the end of the shift.
- Advantages: Drivers are exempt from maintaining ELDs or detailed logbooks and are not required to take the 30-minute break.
- Important notes: If a driver exceeds the 150 air-mile radius or 14-hour limit, they must log that day using an ELD or paper logbook.
This exemption applies mainly to local delivery services and operations within a specified radius.
